It is no secret that people of color face unique challenges in the workplace. One of these challenges is isolation. A recent study shows that nearly 60% of Black women feel isolated at work. This sense of isolation can hurt job performance and satisfaction. So, what can be done to combat isolation in the workplace?
Here are three tips:
1) Seek out mentors and sponsors.
2) Join or create an employee resource group.
3) Speak up when you see or experience something wrong.
1) Seek out mentors and sponsors. Mentors and sponsors can provide guidance, support, and advice. They can also help you navigate the political landscape of your organization. When choosing a mentor or sponsor, look for someone respected and influenced within the organization. Also, ensure they are someone you feel comfortable sharing your concerns and goals with.
2) Join or create an employee resource group. Employee resource groups (ERGs) are voluntary, employee-led groups that promote a diverse and inclusive workplace. ERGs typically focus on one or more aspects of diversity, such as race, gender, sexual orientation, religion, or disability. Joining an ERG can help you connect to others who share your identity and experiences. If no ERG meets your needs, consider starting one.
3) Speak up when you see or experience something wrong. Racism, sexism, and other forms of discrimination are still everywhere in the workplace. So when you visit or share something wrong, speak up!
Doing so will stand up for yourself and others afraid to speak out.
Isolation in the workplace is a real problem for people of color. If you are feeling isolated at work, there are things you can do to combat this feeling.
